This publication serves both as a book for reading on Russian history of the 17th–18th centuries and as a guide to sources and literature. While striving to reflect all the best and most valuable books, the author emphasizes the aspects... and periods of the homeland's past that have rarely been covered by historians in general courses. These include the Time of Troubles in the early 17th century and the Schism of the Church, the ambiguous nature and consequences of Peter I's reforms, the enlightened absolutism of Catherine II, political history, and social thought. In the characterizations of these topics, the author, in addition to contemporary works, draws upon the studies of pre-revolutionary researchers and historians of the Russian emigration, as well as the works of Russian philosophers and thinkers of the Silver Age.
