The Witch

Teffi regarded the collection "The Witch," published in 1936, as her most successful book. On its pages, witches and forest spirits, household spirits and mermaids, water spirits and shapeshifters, as well as other characters from ancient Slavic myths, fairy tales,... legends, traditions, beliefs, and customs, which the writer heard in her childhood spent in the Russian province, come to life. All these stories are told with Teffi's characteristic warmth, soulful sincerity, and humor, and the already expressive language, praised for its elegance by Bunin, Kuprin, and Merezhkovsky, reaches its peak in "The Witch."
