The lone wolf of Wall Street, economic dictator, the grey cardinal of the White House, was how Bernard Baruch was described. Having amassed a fortune on the stock exchange, Baruch turned to politics, becoming the economic adviser to five consecutive presidents of America. During World War I, he headed the U.S. War Industries Board, transitioning American industry to a wartime footing and profiting greatly from it. Later, as a member of the Supreme Economic Council at the Versailles Conference, he contributed to redrawing the political map of the world, and subsequently hit the jackpot during the Great Depression. He was the one who introduced the term 'Cold War' into circulation. In his autobiographical book, Baruch recounts his family, financial adventures, meetings and work with state figures, and reflects on the politics and economy of his country.
