Barry Edward O'Meara (1786-1836), a doctor, of Irish descent. Served in the British Royal Navy. Accompanied Napoleon to Saint Helena Island, where he was his physician for three years. He became embroiled in a conflict between Napoleon and the island's... governor, Hudson Lowe, whom he accused of inhumane treatment of the prisoner. In 1818, he was expelled from the island. In 1822, he published his memoirs "Voice from Saint Helena Island," in which he exposed the cruel treatment to which the French emperor was subjected on the island. The book immediately became a bestseller and went through numerous editions. It is rightly considered one of the most truthful and noteworthy books about Napoleon during his exile.
