The author of this book analyzes shamanic techniques of ecstasy in detail: from ritual dance with a tambourine and choreographic imitation of the behavior of birds and animals to intoxication by hemp smoke and mushroom intoxication. Studying a vast array of scientific data, Mircea Eliade concludes that shamanism cannot be dismissed as mere instances of fantasy or chaotic hallucinations: such visions correspond to specific traditional models, distinctly expressed and rich in theoretical content.
