"Awakening" and "Evelina and Her Friends" are the last novels by Gaito Gazdanov published during the writer's lifetime. They preserve the author's unique style and verbal virtuosity, subtle irony and vivid imagery, psychological depth and traditions of European existentialism, but they are perhaps his most lyrical and bright works. Each of the heroes has their own story and their own real and metaphorical journey, but each of them – whether an ordinary accountant or eternally young Parisian intellectuals – believes in miracles and seeks themselves through caring for others, love, and friendship.
