The most influential guild in Florence for a long time was the Arte di Calimala. The guild primarily focused on processing coarse cloth, which spread from Florence throughout Europe. In the late Middle Ages, Arte di Calimala managed not only... production but also the trade of its products. The guild had its own fleet, and trading houses, representatives of the guild, could be found in almost all major European cities.

As is known, the Florentine Republic was governed by a council of trusted citizens, among whom were members of the Arte di Calimala guild. The guild did not forget its contribution to the cultural heritage of Florence. It is known that it made generous donations for the construction and decoration of the largest cathedrals in Florence.
