In the late Middle Ages, Arte di Calimala managed not only production but also the trade of its products. The guild had its own fleet, and trading houses, representatives of the guild, could be found in almost all major European cities.

As is known, the Florentine Republic was governed by a council of trusted citizens, among whom were members of the Arte di Calimala guild.
