Gobseck

The novel "Gobseck," part of the epic "Human Comedy," is one of the most famous works by Honoré de Balzac. The calculating and incredibly miserly usurer Gobseck is ruthless towards his clients - socialite ladies and aristocrats, actors and wastrels. The passions that drive these people to extremes leave him indifferent. But the "man of the promissory note" Gobseck, despite his rationality, confronts his individual passion - the passion for profit - on the brink of death; he dies without leaving a will, in a house filled with rotting delicacies, money, and jewels.
