Kalevala

For the first time in more than a century and a half, the first prose translation of "Kalevala" is returning to Russian readers, prepared by the famous St. Petersburg publisher and writer Eduard Andreevich Granstrom in 1881.
The world-famous Karelian-Finnish epic "Kalevala", based on ancient folk songs-runes, stands alongside the Scandinavian "Edda", the German "Song of the Nibelungs", and Homer's "Iliad" in significance and beauty. Under the influence of this epic, dozens of masterpieces were created, such as "Silmarillion", "The Hobbit", and "The Lord of the Rings" by John Tolkien, who, when inventing the language of the elves, imitated the sounds of the melodies of "Kalevala".
The distinctive feature of our edition is not only the beautiful classic translation but also the rare illustrations, gathered for the first time in one publication, created by the classics of Finnish, European, and Russian book graphics.
