Black Beauty. The Autobiography of a Horse. Grade 6-7

The thoroughbred stallion Black Beauty lives a life alongside people and for people. Anna Sewell tells his story from birth, when his mother gently instructed him, teaching him the rules of behavior for a noble horse. Over the years, he had different owners, including a wealthy squire, a rough but caring cabman, and an entrepreneurial owner of a rental service who rented horses to indifferent, and sometimes cruel, city dwellers. Therefore, the life story of Black Beauty is also a tale about England in the 19th century, in which the author judges both noble aristocrats and representatives of the London lower classes on a common scale—attitudes toward a living being, which truly reveals the nature of each person.
