Bulwark

Solon Barnes is a Quaker, a deeply religious man with conservative views inherited from his parents. He has always led an honest life and worked hard, which ultimately brought him wealth. Solon holds a position in the management of a bank and is married to the daughter of a wealthy man, although he married not for convenience, but for love. This couple has five children. It seems that this is an example of success achieved through honest means, not as a result of a deal with conscience. Such examples serve as Bulwark of the United States of America. However, Solon's children do not aspire to follow their father's example — they have different goals and ideals.
This novel by the classic of American literature Theodore Dreiser (1871—1945) addresses the eternal theme of the conflict between fathers and children, as well as the theme of traditional values, which are increasingly less sought after in the modern world.
