The novel "Confession of a Happy Person. Letters from Prison" stands alongside the recent global bestseller "Orange is the New Black," which has been translated into many languages and adapted into a similarly popular series. But Polina Breiter — our former compatriot, a resident of Odessa (who is also innocent, unlike the heroine of the American book) — spent 15 months in an American prison.
This human document is unique. Perhaps occasionally, individuals as honest, sincere, and open as she is find themselves in American prisons, but the likelihood is very slim that they are also capable of viewing everything that happens to them as an opportunity for spiritual growth, reflecting on their experiences, and conveying their insights and observations in simple, yet truthful and precise words.
Here, there are not only the feelings and experiences of the heroine, but also discussions about the peculiarities of American justice, descriptions of daily life in a women's prison, and remarkable psychological portraits of her fellow inmates — murderers, drug dealers, and others.
