The book by S.S. Oldenburg "The Reign of Emperor Nicholas II" covers the period from 1894 to 1917 – from the ascent to the throne of Emperor Nicholas II to his abdication in February 1917 – and is dedicated to... the rule of the last Russian emperor and his role in the revolution that broke out in Russia. Sergey Sergeyevich Oldenburg (1887–1940) was a professor of history, publicist, and journalist, a participant in the White movement, who emigrated from Russia to France after the revolution of 1917, where he had the unique opportunity to study copies of historical documents that had been removed for safekeeping and were stored in the Russian embassy in Paris. This is why the Supreme Monarchist Council commissioned him in the mid-1920s to write a scholarly work on the history of Nicholas II's reign. The book was completed in 1940 and has been published several times not only abroad but also in modern Russia. To this day, S.S. Oldenburg's book remains the most objective and comprehensive study of the controversial and complex era of the rule of the last Russian emperor.
