According to his fellow writers in the fantastic genre, Shikley was the foremost disruptor in science fiction. The humor and irony that fill his short stories, novellas, and novels are so unique that it's enough to pull a few lines... from the text to immediately recognize it as Shikley. The author himself did not hide his attitude toward literature: «I have tried all my life not to be too serious. I do not consider myself a political thinker and I try to convey everything to readers in a light, unobtrusive way. Irony — is my style. I did not choose irony as the natural basis of my thinking; it just turned out that way. I believe that people find mockery more interesting than moralizing, an entertaining story rather than a verbose discussion. If what I'm saying remains misunderstood or partially understood, if people just read a funny story and relax, I am quite satisfied with that.»
