A book that effectively marks the beginning of the golden age of women's English prose, which has given us many immortal masterpieces. The story of the orphaned daughters... of a poor provincial landowner and their difficult path to achieving marital happiness does not overwhelm with a multitude of events and does not astonish the imagination with romantic adventures and tumultuous passions — however, it is in this work that a heroine with a new type of character first appears in European prose: intelligent, ironic, determined, perceiving love primarily as equal partnership, closeness and mutual understanding. Is this not why Austen's novels remain interesting?
