The Shape of Time. Notes on the History of Things

The outstanding art historian George Kubler (1912–1996), author of numerous works on pre-Columbian American culture, dedicated the book "The Shape of Time" (1962), his only theoretical work, to the most fundamental principles of art history — the principles according to... which it distinguishes its subject from the subjects of other disciplines, as well as limits and systematizes its area of research in time and space. Filled with a polemical charge directed against the biographical-iconographic approach to art history, reducing it to the history of artists and subjects, Kubler's book was enthusiastically received by progressive artists of the 1960s and had a significant impact on both art theory and its practice. "The Shape of Time" is being translated into Russian for the first time.
