Lyman Frank Baum created his famous land of Oz for his own children. He told his wife Maud that he did not want their children to grow up on "the wicked tales of the Brothers Grimm". As a result, the characters of the book Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion became beloved not only by the author's children but also by millions of readers.
