Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov (1812—1891) wrote his best novel «Oblomov» with a long break due to a sea voyage, first published one chapter, which he later criticized and reworked himself, and then edited the text for another year. The same measuredness... and slowness the author embedded in the character of the main hero.
Kind, intelligent, and poetic landowner Ilya Ilyich Oblomov could have everything he wishes, however, he spends his days in lazy idleness on his favorite couch, indulging in memories and dreams. He has neither the strength nor the desire to overcome his reclusiveness.
And even love cannot overcome his apathy.
Goncharov reveals to us the dilemma of a person who misses all opportunities but finds happiness and peace in his position, while simultaneously depicting a collective image of social stagnation of the mid-19th century.
However, «Oblomovism» has firmly entered our cultural code and has proven to be a timeless phenomenon.
