Segal's Test

Riga, the early eighties. Mark is the manager of a pawn shop. With housing, but without a home. With women, but without a loved one. With registration, but without a homeland. He lives without dramas and upheavals, but still cannot reach happiness, which, it would seem, is nearby. This search reshapes the hero's life more than once, and the return to the land of his ancestors is only one of the steps on the path to himself. Miriam Zalmanovich's debut novel takes the reader on a journey through the fates of the people of that time, which the streets of Vitebsk, Riga, and Haifa have not yet forgotten. Meeting each character shows that there are no random encounters. And each hero leads the reader down their own new path: with past sins, in search of new happiness and peace, which seems to be always within reach, but constantly unattainable.
