In one of the old districts of St. Petersburg, children are disappearing. The investigations lead the detectives to a psychiatric hospital, the strange house of a famous director, the museum-palace of a grand duke, and a small shop called '24 hours'. Each of the main characters— a detective, a museum guard, and a socialite psychologist— experiences events that can be perceived as both mystical mysteries and the delusions of a troubled mind, and as the real interference of ancient past in modern life. Despite the captivating detective plot, the novel is serious— a reflection on what is happening to us in our world. About lost and stolen children. About eccentrics who are frightened by their own fantasies, yet display remarkable fearlessness in the face of real dangers. Those who are afraid to leave their homes or kiss a girl, yet calmly stand under the barrel of a gun.
