Conversations about Thinking

This book by the outstanding thinker Merab Konstantinovich Mamardashvili includes a series of lectures titled «Conversations about Thinking», delivered to students of Tbilisi State University in 1986—1987.
«Conversations about Thinking» is about philosophy, which the author considers not as an academic... discipline, but as an act that can occur in universal human life situations, an act of thought as an event in the world. This understanding of thinking suggests paying attention to the most elusive layer of thought, which nevertheless forms the basis of its involvement in real processes of movement and the establishment of meaning in human life and history — namely, the figurative or symbolic layer of thinking; in this aspect, some social and cultural processes and events are also discussed.
