Kashcheeva Chain

The autobiographical novel by Mikhail Prishvin "Kashcheeva Chain" is a colorful mosaic, in which vivid episodes come together to form a multifaceted picture of life in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Landowners are going bankrupt and becoming impoverished, the age-old structure of the village is disintegrating. Merchants and industrialists are accumulating huge fortunes through wild, adventurous methods. Once large families are falling apart and disintegrating. The youth are leaving their parental homes — some for the revolution, some for art, some for science, others simply moving abroad. Girls refuse the role of modest guardians of the hearth and yearn for self-realization. Everything is vague, everything seems to have shifted from its place — and gropingly, with difficulty, sometimes painfully, seeks its way through the fog into the future...
