The Middle Ages. The most controversial and contradictory era in human history. Some perceive it as a time of beautiful ladies and noble knights, minstrels and jesters, when lances were shattered, feasts were noisy, serenades were sung, and sermons were... preached. For others, the Middle Ages is a time of fanatics and executioners, inquisitorial bonfires, stinky cities, epidemics, cruel customs, unsanitary conditions, universal darkness, and savagery. Is it really true that knights and people in general during the Middle Ages were of short stature — no taller than one and a half meters, and those who reached the current average of 175 cm were considered almost giants? And in the Middle Ages, in fact, no one except monks knew how to read and write, bathed only twice in a lifetime — after birth and before death, stank horribly, and were infested with fleas? And a sword weighed 20 kg, while armor weighed all of 100, so knights were hoisted onto their horses with a winch, and they had to relieve themselves right in their armor because it was simply impossible to take them off?
