Gypsum Trumpeter. The End of the Film

The famous novel by the master of “grotesque realism” Yuri Polyakov, “Gypsum Trumpeter,” has no analogs in modern domestic literature either in terms of entertainment, genre distinctiveness, or thematic scope. This “ironic epic,” as critics called it, combines elements of... detective fiction, a love story, a psychological novel, and social satire, and with its abundance of brilliant inserted novellas, it resembles the “Decameron.” As always, the author captivates the reader with a virtuoso plot, conquers with vivid and complex character portraits, delights with a sharpened ironic style, astounds with unexpected metaphors and aphorisms, and moves with refined eroticism. The second book includes the third and fourth parts of the novel – “Man-Lover and Man-Loving Woman” and “Feast of the Defeated,” as well as an epilogue that ties all the numerous threads of the narrative together and is titled by the author “The End of the Film.” The volume concludes with a selection of “Thus Spoke Saint-John Perse.” These are the reader-favorite author’s aphorisms extracted from the text of the ironic epic.
