Quiet Don Volumes 1-4

The action of the novel «Quiet Don» begins in the final days before the war in a Cossack settlement. Soon, the peaceful life will be left in the past: it will be destroyed by the battle with an external, foreign... enemy — in World War I, and then with its own neighbors, relatives, and yesterday's friends — in the Civil War. The main character of the novel, Grigory Melekhov, is preparing himself for a peaceful family life and labor, but fate tears him away from home and throws him into the whirlpool of tragic events. He spends many years at the front, trying to find meaning and purpose in everything that is happening, — but he cannot find his place on anyone's side. In this fractured world, there are no right sides. The meaning of life is preserved in family and loved ones, held in the poignant love story of Grigory, but fate takes away even the dearest people one by one.
