Horacio Quiroga (1878, Salto, Uruguay — 1937, Buenos Aires) — Uruguayan writer, who lived in Argentina, one of the brightest Latin American writers, master of the short story. We present to the readers perhaps the best collection of stories by O. Quiroga — «The Exiled» (1926). Under the influence of Edgar Allan Poe, Rudyard Kipling, and Guy de Maupassant, the writer developed a remarkable precision of style, which allowed him to masterfully tell about the violence and horrors hidden behind the outward friendliness of nature. The action of his stories takes place in the Misiones jungle, in northern Argentina, where O. Quiroga lived for many years and from where he borrowed situations and characters for his stories.
