The novel "The White Guard" tells about the Civil War in Ukraine in 1918. Bulgakov describes real events, and many characters had existing prototypes, therefore the novel has not only artistic but also documentary value; critics received it ambiguously, and...
the Soviet power and emigrant circles deemed it too loyal to the opposing side in beliefs. Considering it as part of a larger trilogy about the years of the Civil War, "The White Guard" remained the only written part, but it served as the basis for the play "Days of the Turbins." The play was written at the commission of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1925 and was permitted for staging a year later. Like the novel, it describes the events of the Civil War and the personal tragedy of the Turbin family, occurring against the backdrop of the breakdown of eras and the collapse of the old life.
The play "The Run" is based on the memories of Bulgakov's second wife about emigration during the Civil War and also describes real events. During the author's lifetime, the play was not staged; it was personally criticized by Stalin: "The Run" in its current form represents an anti-Soviet phenomenon." It was first performed on stage in 1957.
