On a winter night in 1850, the infant Lily Mortimer was left at the gates of a park, where she was found by a police constable. From the London Foundling Hospital, she was sent to be raised by a foster family.
Lily enjoyed her life on the "Rookery" farm, but by law, at the age of six, she had to return to the Hospital – a terrible and unjust place.

Growing up, Lily steps into the harsh world of Victorian London and finds work at the famous "Wig Shop" of Belle Charoville. But all this time, she hides a terrible secret.

After meeting the man who saved Lily's life, she begins to feel an irresistible attraction to him.
But what does this man hold – the key to her heart or certain doom?
