Nero Wolfe, a passionate orchid collector, a great gourmet, a beer lover, and a great detective, practically never leaves his home. At the final stage of the contest organized by a perfume company, one of the organizers is murdered, and answers to the final questions disappear from his wallet. All five finalists are under suspicion, and to avoid a scandal, the organizers ask Wolfe to find the piece of paper with the answers. Contrary to the police opinion, Wolfe maintains the version that the person who stole the answers and the murderer are the same person. In addition to the novel "Make It Before Midnight", the collection includes three more stories in which Wolfe, forced to hide from arrest, investigates complicated cases and presents the true killer to the court, once again proving that the police rushed to conclusions.
