Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece

Nikolai Albertovich Kun (1877-1940) - an outstanding historian and educator who devoted his life to the study of Antiquity.
Greek culture is the foundation of modern civilization. According to Kun himself, it "had an immeasurable influence on the culture of Europe." Without knowing ancient Greek myths, it is impossible to understand many literary, artistic, and musical works that embody the images of Orpheus and Eurydice, Narcissus and Odysseus. Our speech is filled with expressions, the roots of which go back to Ancient Greece - "the Augean stables," "Sisyphean labor," "Achilles' heel," "the apple of discord," "to sink into oblivion," "Pandora's box." In the sky, we seek the constellations of Andromeda and Perseus, Hydra and Centaur, Pegasus and Lyre.
In 1914, Kun's book "What the Greeks and Romans Told About Their Gods and Heroes" was published. In the mid-20th century, the text was somewhat shortened and released under a different title - "Legends and Myths of Ancient Greece." And this very book became one of the most famous popular scientific presentations of Greek mythology, enduring hundreds of reprints, including in foreign languages, and inspiring more than one generation of scholars (for example, M. L. Gasparov).
An engaging retelling of ancient primary sources - the poems of Hesiod, Ovid, Homer - brings the distant world of the ancient Greeks closer and makes it clearer. And although there are no winged horses, malevolent gorgons, and immortal gods on Olympus, Greek myths reflect human life as it has always been, and that inexplicable and unexplored, to which we strive and where we want to return.
