In the 1960s, a group of Soviet authors wrote a collective novel. There were nine authors, each writing a chapter. The order of writing the chapters was determined by drawing lots. Valentin Katayev got the first number, Anatoly Gladilin wrote... the second chapter, and then came Yuri Kazakov, Lev Slaviny, Vasily Aksenov, Ilya Zverev, and Vladimir Voinovich, each further developing the plot. The task of unraveling it fell to Fazil Iskander and Georgy Vladimov.
