The War of the Worlds = Война миров

H.G. Wells (1866-1946) is famous primarily for his science fiction works, the main themes of which (space travel, atomic weapons, laser application, the idea of invisibility) have become commonplace in modern literature, and some have changed their genre affiliation, gaining... realism not only in books but also in everyday life.
The novel "The War of the Worlds" (1897) depicts the invasion of Martians on Earth: their aggressive target is the old good England. The technical, intellectual, and military superiority of the alien invaders seems to leave humans no chance, even though some of them demonstrate strength of spirit and courage. It is not the heroism of individuals that will help Earthlings survive the slaughter orchestrated by the aliens, but mere luck: ordinary bacteria will prove far more terrifying to the Martians than artillery.
