The author wrote about the concept of this unusual work: "The idea for the plot came from Mark Twain's observation about how unfortunate it is that the best part of life occurs closer to the beginning, and the worst - closer to the end. My experiment with just one person in a very ordinary world scarcely could fully do justice to this idea."
