The stylistic and linguistic means that O. Henry uses are extremely diverse. The writer introduces neologisms, Latin, French, Spanish phrases, jargon words, local dialects; his heroes can rise to great heights or descend to the very bottom, and then the incorrect use of grammatical forms vividly characterizes the characters themselves. Sometimes, for greater comedic effect, the author gives the thoughts of tramps words better suited for university professors.
The narratives often deal with fraud of various kinds, which is why many fictional words can be found in the stories.
