Lydia Perez owns a small bookstore in the Mexican city of Acapulco, where she lives with her husband Sebastián, a journalist, and their eight-year-old son, Luka. After Sebastián publishes an article in the newspaper exposing the local drug cartel, the... gangsters stage a bloody massacre, killing all of Lydia's relatives and loved ones - sixteen people. Miraculously, only she and Luka survive. Realizing that they are being hunted, mother and son flee from Acapulco. In a desperate bid for their lives, they head north towards the border with the United States. They soon understand that the nightmare they experienced is just the beginning: the road to a new life will require truly superhuman efforts from them.
