Lucius Annaeus Seneca is a prominent Roman Stoic philosopher, tutor of Nero, poet, and statesman. His works were written in a simple and accessible language, which attracted the attention of both his contemporaries and philosophers of the Renaissance; he was... called "the most interesting Stoic in the world." Seneca emphasized that one "virtue is enough for happiness," and therefore the sage must be emotionally resilient to misfortunes. His "Letters to Lucilius" demonstrate Seneca's aspiration for ethical perfection and "represent a kind of philosophical testament for future generations." "Destructive passions, especially anger and grief, must be eradicated or restrained according to reason." As a tragedian, he is best known for such plays as "Medea," "Thyestes," and "Phaedra." Seneca's influence on subsequent generations is immense: during the Renaissance, he was "a sage who was admired and revered, even among Christian philosophers and clergymen; a master of literary style and a model of dramatic art." These words by English scholar Edward F. Watling perfectly describe Seneca's philosophical legacy. The book collects the brightest and most popular works of the philosopher, divided into three main blocks: "Moral Letters to Lucilius" — a work of the epistolary genre. In them, the author gives advice on how to structure one’s life according to the philosophy of Stoicism. The letters are among the most famous and significant works of Seneca and Roman literature as a whole. The second block contains Seneca's tragedies, namely "Medea," "Phaedra," "Oedipus," "Thyestes," "Agamemnon," and "Octavia." Written predominantly on ancient Greek subjects, these tragedies influenced the development of ancient Roman literature and European drama. They inspired Shakespeare and the dramatists of French classicism, Corneille and Racine. The purpose of Seneca's tragedies is to convince the need to curb the passions that seize a person: love and hatred, the desire for power and unlimited authority. Finally, the treatise "On Happiness"
