Balagan, or The End of Loneliness

A masterpiece of American intellectual prose of the 20th century. One of the best novels by Kurt Vonnegut, written in his unique style, in which social and political satire, dystopian science fiction, and almost psychedelic phantasmagoria weave a single whimsical fabric of text. Who wouldn't you meet in this balagan? Ape-like Neanderthals create "technology to eliminate the feeling of loneliness," rational Chinese have shrunk themselves to microscopic sizes and set off to colonize Mars, Americans believe in the Kidnapped Jesus, who can turn out to be the first passerby, and the force of gravity constantly changes, sometimes pressing all living things to the ground, sometimes granting an amazing lightness. However, the variability of all that exists is an immutable property of the literary worlds created by Vonnegut's imagination. As is the admiration of readers for his talent.
