On a parallel Earth, Neanderthals have created a completely different civilization. Physicist Ponter Boddit accidentally finds himself from his universe in a Canadian research center. Fortunately for him, a team of human scientists, including paleoanthropologist expert Mary Vaughan, quickly recognizes... and accepts Ponter. A companion implant, which is embedded in every Neanderthal, helps solve the language problem and many other minor inconveniences. However, it cannot eliminate the cultural differences, as much is foreign to Ponter. It also cannot help his colleague Adekor Khaldu, who remained in the Neanderthal world and was accused of murdering Ponter.
