Karamzin opened a new era in Russian literature, paying special attention to the world of human feelings. It is within the framework of sentimentality that the most famous stories of the writer were written – "Natalya, the Boyar's Daughter," "Marfa... the Landlady," "Sierra Morena," "The Island of Bornholm," "Julia," and, of course, the textbook "Poor Liza," enchanting with its lyricism and elegiac tonality.
"Journey from Petersburg to Moscow" by Radischev is a kind of journalistic variation on the theme of the "sentimental journey" – travel notes concentrated not so much on the actual impressions of the traveler, but on his thoughts and feelings regarding what he saw. What the writer saw in cities, villages, and at postal stations on the way from Petersburg to Moscow turned his book into an angry and tragic reply to Russian serfdom in all its ugliness and cruelty.
