Emilio Salgari was called the "Italian Jules Verne" by his contemporaries. In his youth, while studying at a maritime school, he devoured the novels of the French master of adventure literature and ultimately followed in the footsteps of his idol, writing about two hundred novels and stories. Although the author never left the Adriatic, his romantic and noble pirates roamed all the seas and oceans. His novels from the "Antillean Pirates" series are particularly loved by readers, telling of the incredible adventures of fearsome corsairs who sowed terror in the Spanish colonies along the coasts of South America in the 16th–17th centuries. This edition includes the two concluding novels of this series: "Son of the Red Corsair" and "The Last Buccaneers," in which the interests of great powers collide once again with those of the brave outlaws of the Coast Brotherhood. Naval battles, the dazzling colors of southern islands, unyielding revenge, passion, betrayal, and true love—Emilio Salgari once again gathered all the necessary ingredients of great adventure literature in these novels. The works are accompanied by a complete set of illustrations by the Italian artist Alberto della Valle (1851–1928).
