The work of the outstanding Soviet writer Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy is truly multifaceted: from historical novels and science fiction prose to numerous novellas, short stories, and plays. His novels "Aelita" and "The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin," although met with a considerable degree of skepticism by contemporary literary figures, have become classics of domestic science fiction and even nearly a century later are capable of captivating readers with their vivid imagery, subtle psychology, and intricate plots. Equally famous are other works by the author included in this edition: the novella "The Adventures of Nevzorov, or Ibikus" and the short story "Count Cagliostro." The former is regarded as a model of the early Soviet rogue novel, while the latter is considered a masterpiece of historical prose. The collection also includes: "The Union of Five," "The Murder of Antoine Riveaux," "Blue Cities," and "Extraordinary Adventures on the Volga Steamboat." Magnificent illustrations for the collection were created by recognized masters of book graphics Ivan Arkhipov, Vladimir Bogatkin, and Anatoly Itkin.
