The novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" by American writer Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) quickly gained worldwide fame and recognition. Written in the sentimental style characteristic of 19th century "women's prose," this book brought about a grand revolution in public sentiment, securing an important place not only in the history of literature but also in the cultural and political history of the United States of America. In this edition, the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is presented in full, without the cuts and omissions typical of the Soviet translation, and is accompanied by remarkable rare illustrations by artist Grigory Philipovsky (1909–1987). Also included in the book is the religious-historical novel "Agnes of Sorrento," published ten years after "Uncle Tom's Cabin."
