The BattleCON series is a great choice for fans of intense confrontations with highly unpredictable gameplay. Each game here is alive, going beyond the rules and linear strategies. You can almost endlessly shuffle heroes, exploring their strengths and weaknesses and trying out their unique moves. Sometimes the battle doesn’t even happen on the cards, but at the metagame level — and this simply blows the minds of even the most fervent fans of board fighting games!
A game in the classic duel mode of BattleCON is divided into rounds, and each round — into several phases.
Preparation Phase. Despite the “service” name, this phase is perhaps the most important. For it is at this stage that you decide what your attack will be. Any hit in BattleCON is an “attacking pair”: a style card and a move card. The combination of their parameters will determine how you attack and defend. In addition, the cards can have various effects — they are applied in the corresponding phases of the round.
Advantage Phase. After choosing your attacking pair, don’t rush to reveal it. First, you purchase advantages — special skills and items that may be useful for your fighter in this round. Sometimes it’s useful to boost your character — especially if you suspect what is hidden on your opponent’s cards.
Reveal Phase. Drum roll… and attacking pairs are revealed! First, you check the speed — considering both the parameters on the cards and bonuses from advantages. The one with the higher speed is considered the active player and goes first. During the attack, the active player checks the range, deals damage, and most importantly — determines if the opponent is stunned. If yes, it’s time to move to the last phase. If not — the reacting player attacks in return.
Return Phase. Here lies one of the main tricks of BattleCON. In each round, you have almost all the cards at your disposal — but two style and move cards always lay in the discard pile on the field, visible to your opponent. In this phase, you shift them one space and take the leftmost pair into your hand, while the just played cards are placed in the freed space. So, choosing one combination and hitting the opponent with it is not possible — this isn’t Mortal Kombat!
FINISH HIM! The fight ends in two cases: the health of one of the fighters drops to 0, or at the end of the return phase, there are no power tokens left in the common pool. Tokens are a kind of timer: when they run out, the last round begins, and in the end, the fighter with the most remaining health wins.
