Götz Aly is one of the most authoritative German researchers on Nazism. In this book, he writes about the rampant looting of Europe by the Nazis, from which millions of ordinary Germans benefited. During World War II, Hitler's government turned the state into an unprecedented machine of plunder and was able to provide the overwhelming majority of Germans with socio-political and tax benefits as well as good supplies. The price for this prosperity had to be paid by millions of Europeans whose property and means of subsistence were expropriated: the income from the sale of Jewish property throughout Europe went into the German military treasury. After a long silence on the subject, the benefits that the German "people's community" derived from the crimes of Nazism, war, and the murder of Jews are finally depicted ruthlessly.
