Vladimir Ivanovich Dahl (1801-1872) – Russian writer, lexicographer, ethnographer. Even in his youth, he noticed the difference between the speech of educated people and that of the common folk and began collecting folk words and expressions, trying to determine their... origin. The result of nearly fifty years of work was a collection, unique and probably still the only one of its kind in terms of the volume and diversity of material: it included proverbs and sayings of the Russian people, tongue twisters, omens, and riddles.
