Confucius (Kong Qiu) is an ancient Chinese thinker. His teachings, later named Confucianism, had a huge influence on the spiritual and political development of China and all of East Asia, and from the 17th century, it began to spread to Western Europe. The foundations of Confucianism are outlined by the thinker’s disciples in a collection of aphorisms, dialogues, and notes titled "Judgments and Conversations (Lunyu)". The Russian translation of "Lunyu" was done in 1910 by Pavel Stepanovich Popov, the greatest Russian sinologist of his time, translator of many works of ancient Chinese philosophers and compiler of a Russian-Chinese dictionary, who served in a diplomatic mission in Beijing. His translation is notable for its accuracy, expressiveness, and closeness to the original.
