Professor Darrel Standing, convicted of murder, is serving a life sentence in San Quentin prison, where the guards torture inmates using straightjackets. To survive, Standing finds a way to willfully put himself into a trance and leave his physical body. Each of these journeys allows him to wander through the most distant eras and countries.
