Two passionate men arrange an elaborate duel for the love of the beautiful Shizuko Hatayanagi. Both duelists manage to escape death; however, the mature gentleman Michihiko Okada, who survives only through the mercy of the young Fusao Mitani, cannot bear the shame and takes his own life. This tragic incident becomes the beginning of a series of monstrous crimes that weigh down on the once-prosperous family of Shizuko. But who is behind all the atrocities? A mysterious adversary holding a grudge against Ms. Hatayanagi? Or is it the Vampire – an ugly monster without lips, inexplicably infiltrated into Shizuko's home?.. Edogawa Rampo is the first Japanese writer to entirely devote his creativity to the detective genre. In his homeland, he is known not only as an author but also as a literary critic, the founder of the Association of Detective Writers, and the creator of an award for authors of detective works. Edogawa Rampo was also awarded the Medal of Honor with a Purple Ribbon and other government awards.
