Herman Melville (1819-1891) — American writer and sailor, in whose work and fate the experience of a traveler and the mythopoetic worldview of an artist have merged remarkably organically. The realization of Melville's immense talent did not come immediately, and only a quarter of a century after the writer's death did the outlines of the tremendous contribution he made to the treasury of world literature become visible.
