Empires of the Middle Ages: from Carolingians to Chingizids

The book «Empires of the Middle Ages» edited by the renowned medieval historian Sylvain Gouguenheim brings together for the first time under one cover works that describe the formation and development of 16 empires in different parts of the world.
The aim of this collection is to provide a unified view of similar political entities within a lengthy chronological segment on a planetary scale. The structure of the material is determined by Gouguenheim's classification of empires into three groups: universe empires (such as the Carolingian Empire, Byzantium, the Mongol and Chinese empires, etc.), empires isolated in specific geographic spaces (Bulgarian, Serbian, Japanese, the Latin Empire of Constantinople, the sun empires of Latin America), and also empires with dispersed territories (the German Empire of the Ottonians, the Norman Empire, the Plantagenet Empire, the thalassocratic empires of Venice and Sriwijaya).
